VCJH Science 7 Lesson 5 Animals Flashcards
(93 cards)
vertebrate
animal WITH a backbone
invertebrate
Animal WITHOUT a backbone
exoskeleton
hard, external covering that protects the body
endoskeleton
internal skeleton that support the body - human
What are the two main functions of the muscular system?
Move the body and move material through the body (blood, food and liquids).
What are the three types of muscles? Describe each type.
Smooth - found in organs and blood vessels. Helps materials move through the body.
Cardiac - makes up your heart and never tires
Skeletal - allows you to move. Attached to bones. Flexor and extensor
organs
structures that do specific jobs for the system
Example - heart is an organ in the circulatory system
muscular system
groups of muscles that allow you to move and that move materials inside your body
skeletal system
Bones, cartilage, and the ligaments that hold bones together
respiratory system. Name organs in it.
brings oxygen into the lungs and gets rid of carbon dioxide.
lungs, trachea, and nose
circulatory system
.
Two parts of the circulatory system. Describe their function.
Cardiovascular -
Lymphatic -
Digestive system
breaks down the food you eat
Nervous
.
excretory system
.
endocrine system
integumentary system
List six characteristics most animals have in common.
1- Many cells Multi-cellular
2 - Specialized parts. Differentiation.
3 - Movement
4 - Reproduce Usually sexually.
5 - Consume food
6 - Maintain body temperature Birds and mammals do this with chemical energy. Other animals rely on their environment.
esophagus
.
What are the levels of organization within an organism?
Cell - Tissue - Organ - System
Define these as tissue, organ or system

.
What system are the heart, arteries, and veins in?
Circulatory
What system helps fight diseases with special blood cells?
Circulatory
What system brings supplies, such as food and oxygen, to cells?
Circulatory
