Polytheism
Belief in many gods
Monotheism
Belief in a single god
Pantheism
Divinity = Reality
No distinct personal god. Everything composes an all-encompassing god.
Example - the Force in Star Wars????
Naturalism
Only natural laws and forces operate in the world.
Example - Darwinism or evolution
Post-Modernism
Skepticism or rejection of absolute truth and objective reality. Belief that claims of knowledge or truth are result of social, historical or political discussions or interpretations.
Teleology
Study of nature that describes things in terms of their apparent purpose or goal.
Example - tides - designed to circulate water and nutrients for the ocean ecosystem.
Deontology
Morality of an action based on set of rules that define right/wrong and not the consequences of the action
Example - killing someone is wrong EVEN if it was in self defense
Utilitarianism
Action is morally right if the majority of people benefit from it.
Example - taking someone’s property to build a freeway
- taxing property to provide public services even though only landowners (home owners & businesses) would pay the tax
Ethical Egoism
People should act in their own self-interest.
Examples -
Dark Knight - Joker rigs two ferry boats to blow up each other
Virtue Ethics
Possessing desirable virtues makes one moral and their actions are merely a reflection on that inner morality.
