दंशानपेक्षते == दम्शान् + अपेक्षते

A

दंशानपेक्षते NO, NO, NO! WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A FROG HERE. BASED ON THE PARALLELISM WITH THE FOLLOWING PADA, THIS HAS TO MEAN THAT THE FROG IS SCOPING OUT FLIES (दंशान् ) EVEN WHILE HE SITS IN THE SNAKE’S MOUTH, EVEN AS WE SCOPE OUT PLEASURES EVEN THOUGH WE ARE ALREADY EATEN BY THE SERPENT OF TIME.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\
दंशानपेक्षते (?) == ‘cries out for food’ (transl.) ????
MAYBE MORE LIKE ‘looks to (make) bites of his own’
\
दंशानपेक्षते == दम्शान् + अपेक्षते == ‘he looks around for bites (of food to eat)’ I THINK THIS IS RIGHT GIVEN THE (transl.) AND THE CONTEXT HERE - THE WAY THE VERSE CONTINUES. BUT I FIND NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER IN THE DICTIONARIES THAT दंश m. EVER MEANS ‘food’ OR ‘bite of food’ - AND YET ALL EDITIONS SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME TEXT HERE SO I ASSUME IT IS CORRECT
\
दंश m. daṃśaḥ दंशः [दंश्-अच भावे घञ् वा] 1 Biting, stinging; मुग्धे विधेहि मयि निर्दयदन्तदंशम् Gīt.1. -2 The sting of a snake. -3 A bite, the spot bitten; छेदो दंशस्य दाहो वा M.4.4; U.3.35. -4 Cutting, tearing. -5 A gad-fly; R.2.5; Ms.1.4; Y.3.215. -6 A flaw, fault, defect (in a jewel). -7 A tooth; प्रुत्युप्तमन्तः सविषश्च दंशः -8 Pungency. -9 An armour; शितविशिखहतो विशीर्णदंशः Bhāg.1.9.38. -1 A joint, limb. -Comp. -भीरुः, -भीरुकः a buffalo. -वदनः a heron.
\
√अपेक्ष् == अप + √ ईक्ष् I अपेक्षते ( īkṣ-) to look away, to look round ; to have some design ; to have regard to, to respect ; to look for, wait for ; to expect, hope ; to require, have an eye to ; with na-, not to like
