Chemistry- Basics Flashcards
(24 cards)
Pure science
The search for a better understanding of our physical and natural world for its own sake
Science
A search that deals with learning facts about the universe
Applied Science (Technology)
Practical application of scientific discoveries
Chemistry
The study of matter which includes the composition, structure, properties, and changes that it undergoes // known as central science because it overlaps so many sciences
Mass
Amount of matter
Weight
The force of gravity on an object
Organic chemistry
Study of carbon containing compounds
Inorganic chemistry
Study of nonorganic substances
Analytical chemistry
Identification of the composition of materials
Biochemistry
Study of chemistry of living things
Physical chemistry
Study of theories and experiments that describes the behavior of chemicals
Phlogiston Theory
- When an object burns, it gives off a substance called phlogiston
- It stops burning when the air surrounding the object is filled with phlogiston
Modern theory of burning
- when an object burns, it uses up oxygen around it
- it stops burning when there is no more oxygen
Physical Property
A property that can be determined without altering the identity of the substance (color, freezing point, magnetic, solubility (dissolve in water), specific heat, dissolve with oil
Physical changes
Changes that don’t alter the identity of the substance (crushing, tearing, phase changes, sugar dissolving in water)
Chemical property
Properties that can’t be observed without changing the identity of the substance (heat of combustion, flammability, half life, reactivity with water)
Chemical change
The identity is altered ( salt in water, corrode, burn, oxidize, tarnish, rot, photosynthesis)
Intensive properties
Property that does not depend on the size of sample (used to identify the substance) // boiling point, Melton point, density
Extensive property
Property that depends on how much of a particular sample there is (volume, weight, mass)
Solid to Gas
Sublimation
Gas to Solid
Deposition
Liquid to Solid
Solidification
Liquid to Gas
Vaporizing
Gas to Liquid
Condensation
