Pathak- Endocrine System Flashcards
(12 cards)
Hormone
Secreted chemical messages that initiate changed in the cells that receive them
Endocrine system
Consist of hormones and the various cells that secrete and receive them
Target cells
Particular cells that are affected by hormones
Peptide hormones
Hormones composed of short amino acid chained (peptide)
Amino- acid Derivatives
Synthesized from single amino acids
Sterile Hormones
- synthesizer from cholesterol
- secreted by the ovaries, placenta, testes, and adrenal cortex
Prostaglandins
- Synthesized from fatty acid
- molecules consist of 2 fatty carbon chains attached to a 5- carbon ring
General Location of Hormone Receptors
- plasma membrane
- inside (nucleus)
Second messenger
- Transfers the signal from first messenger ( hormone) to molecules within the cell
- involved in direct mechanisms
Cyclic AMP
- Acts as a second messenger and initiates a chain of reactions inside the cell
- changed from ATP by an enzyme
Hormone Receptors On Plasma Membrane
- not lipid soluble hormones (usually composed of amino acids)
- short lived
Hormone Receptors in Nucleus
- take long time
- steroid and thyroid hormones
