Chemistry- Element, Compound, Mixture Flashcards
(15 cards)
Atom
The simplest building block of matter that still retains the properties of the original substance
Gas
Highly compressible
Pure substance
Has a fixed composition and well defined chemical and physical properties
Elements
- has only 1 type of atom
- can not be broken down by chemical means
- diamond, nichrome wire
Compounds
- consists of 2 or more DIFFERENT elements
- can be broken down by chemical means
Diatomic Elements
H2, O2, F2, Br2, I2, N2, Cl2
Mixture
Consists of two or more substances, each retains its individual properties
Heterogeneous mixture
Visibly distinguishable parts
Homogeneous mixture
The same throughout (uniform)
Filtration funnel
- separates solids and liquids
- solids can not pass through filtration paper
Decantation
Pour the water out, solid stays at bottom
Distillation
- separation of liquids based on boiling points
- works if liquids dissolve with one another
Chromatography
Separates substances based on their ability to move in a mobile phase
Separating funnel
- separates liquids based on polarity
- works only if the liquids DO NOT MIX with one another
Centrifuge
- separates solids and liquids
- most useful when the solids ARE EXTREMELY SMALL
