5th - Science Unit 5 Lesson 4 Part 2 Flashcards
(32 cards)
How would you describe rainfall in the grasslands?
Irregular and usually not plentiful
What are grassland s sometimes called?
Prairies
How would you describe the temperatures in the grasslands?
Cool in winter and warm in the summer. And can be windy.
What is a characteristic of the grasslands that make it great for farming?
It has fertile soil.
What does deciduous mean?
Falling off
Where are deciduous forests found?
Eastern North America, northeastern Asia, and western and Central Europe
How would you describe the temperature in the deciduous forests?
Warm summer and cool winter
What do many trees lose in the winter in deciduous forests? And what does this do?
Many trees lose their leaves in the winter. With fewer leaves, less transpiration occurs, enabling trees to conserve water because water is scarce.
Where do you find tropical rain forests?
Close to the equator
What is the climate like in the tropical rain forests?
Hot and humid with abundance of rainfall
What does the climate in a tropical rain forests allow for?
Enormous variety of species - it is home to more species than an other land biomes combined.
Where are temperate rain forests found?
In some Pacific Northwest areas
What does temperate mean?
Mild
How is the temperature of temperate rain forests compared to tropical rain forests?
The temperatures are lower than tropical rain forests and rainfall is plentiful.
List the Freshwater ecosystems that are found in Louisiana.
- Ponds and lakes
- Streams and rivers
- Wetlands
- Estuaries
What are two characteristics of ponds and lakes?
- Water does not appear to move
2. A layer of green algae sometimes covers the water’s surface
What are two characteristics of streams and rivers?
- Have moving water
2. Organisms have adaptations to keep from being swept away.
What are some adaptations that the organisms in streams and rivers have?
- Reeds have roots that anchor them to the bottom.
- Fish have streamlined bodies to help them swim in the currents.
- Other animals have hooks and claws that help them cling to rocks and other objects.
Where are the wetlands found in Louisiana?c
Coastal Louisiana
What percentage of the wetlands in the United States are in Louisiana?
40%
What do the wetlands include?
Swamps, marshes and bogs
Why are wetlands important today?
- They are rich in plant life
- Provide a home for many living things
- Important breeding ground for birds and other animals
- Serve as a natural water filter
- Provide flood protection and erosion control
What is different about estuaries?
They contain a unique combination of salt and fresh water. It has less salty than oceans but is saltier than water in rivers.
The plants and animals that live in estuaries have what that helps them survive the variations in salt content (or salinity)?
Adaptations
