5th - U7 L1 - Weather Study Guide Flashcards
(23 cards)
Fog
A cloud that forms near the ground
Weather
The condition of the troposphere at any given place and time
Front
When one air mass meets a different air mass
Jet stream
A high altitude wind caused by the air temperature differences in air masses
Air mass
A volume of air defined by its temperature and water vapor
Forecast
A prediction about whether
Stationary front
A boundary between two air masses where neither one is strong enough to move the other one. (So it does not move)
Weather map
Map with symbols that represent different variables like cold and warm fronts
How does water vapor form clouds?
Water vapor condenses around tiny particles of dust
What determines the appearance of the cloud?
How high it forms in the atmosphere and the temperature is there
Three types of clouds, you will need to know where they form and how they look.
Do cloud cards
What is fog?
A cloud that forms near the ground
What makes clouds thick and gray?
When water drops collide and condense, sunlight is not able to pass through
Know how each type of precipitation forms
Rain – precipitation falls as rain when the air temperature is warm and water vapor is present
Hail - forms and some thunderstorm clouds when drops collide
Sleet - forms when raindrops fall through a layer of dry cold air near the ground
Snow – forms when air temperatures fall below freezing
How is rainfall measured, how is snowfall measure?
- Rainfall is measured by a rain gauge which is a gauge that shows centimeters or inches
- snowfall is measured by a meter stick or a yardstick which is not always accurate
Know what happens when a cold air mass approaches A warm air mass
A front happens which means a front is produced
Know what the stationary front is
A boundary by which two different air masses and weather moves
Know what the jetstream is, and how it affects the movement of weather in the United States
High altitude wind caused by large temperature differences in air masses. It is important because it moves air masses around the country
Know what type of whether the high-pressure system brings and what type of whether the Low pressure system brings
- High-pressure systems bring dry clear weather
- low-pressure systems bring warm and stormy weather
Weather maps: know the symbol for cold front and the symbol for warm front
The symbol for a cold front are blue lines with blue triangles
the symbol for a warm front is a red line of half circle
Be able to explain one way technology is used to study weather
- weather the balloons measuring high in the atmosphere
- radar provides information about precipitation and wind
- satellites provide information about temperature, wind, moisture, clouds and cloud cover
Be able to explain why measuring the amount of snowfall is not always accurate
Measuring snowfall is not always accurate because it can change. For example, wind can blow snow into drifts
