How was the land used in the three different regions?
- New England Colonies - thin rocky soil made farming difficult. But the region was rich in other valuable resources - excellent timber and waters rich in fish and whales
- Middle Colonies - warmer climate and more fertile soil made for better farming. Grew wheat and long wide rivers made travel and transport of goods easier.
- Sourhern Colonies - warmest climate and longest growing season. Grew tobacco and rice.
Where were the 13 English colonies located?
In the eastern part of what is now the United States between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains
What was an important characteristic of the Puritan colonies in Massachusetts?
Leaders made strict laws that people were required to follow including requiring all citizens to attend church.

The English captured New Netherlands without firing a shot. And it was renamed New York after the Duke of York.

The king had borrowed money from Penn’s wealthy father so Penn asked for land as repayment.
Why did Penn want to build a colony in North America?
He wanted to build a colony based on his religious beliefs. He was a Quaker.
Briefly explain Penn’s goal for the colony of Pennsylvania.
It would be a “holy experiment” where people from different nations and of all religions could live together in peace.
What were the Quakers beliefs?
They opposed war and believed that people could worship God without going to church or following religious leaders.
