6th - Religion Chap 13 Flashcards
(45 cards)
After more than a year at Sinai, the Israelites were on their way again, following the cloud, the sign of God’s presence to where?
Canaan
What did the Israelites want immediately?
The Promised Land
When the Israelites reached Canaan, Moses sent a leader from each of the twelve tribes to do what?
Survey the land
How long were these leaders gone surveying the land?
40 days
Describe what the leader found when they surveyed the land?
Two returned with a cluster of grapes. They reported “It does indeed flow with milk and honey, but it’s people are fierce. The towns are fortified and strong.” They proclaimed “We ought to seize this land. We can do it.” Moses and Aaron agreed.
But the people were afraid to engage the Canaanites in battle. What did they want to do?
They wanted to choose a new leader and return to Egypt.
Who joined Caleb to defend Moses and Aaron?
Joshua
What did Joshua and Caleb say to the people?
“If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into this land and give it to us. Do not rebel against the Lord. Do not be afraid of the people of this land, for the Lord is with us.”
What did the Israelites do after hearing Joshua and Caleb’s plea?
They did not listen. They had made their decision they would not march against Canaan
Knowing that it was God’s desire to save all people, what did Moses do?
He offered a prayer of intercession, meaning that he prayed on behalf of the people.
What did God do when the Israelites did not obey him?
He agreed not to destroy them. In his mercy, he forgave them, but he let them suffer the results of their sins.
What was the punishment?
The people that had complained would not see the land that God had promised their ancestors. Instead they would spend 40 years in the wilderness, moving slowly to the east side of Canaan.
Who would live to enter Canaan?
Only Caleb and Joshua, who had followed God faithfully, along with some of the young children
During these years of wandering, what did the Israelites do?
The people could not quite put their faith totally in the Lord. They grumbled and complained. Blaming Moses and Aaron. Wishing they were back in Egypt or even dead.
What would Moses do when they complained?
He, Moses, would pray for them and the Lord would provide for them in some new way.
When the Israelites arrived in Meribah, they complained because again there was no water to drink. What did God do?
God told Moses to call the people together and to cause water to flow from a rock by striking it with his staff. Moses questioned whether God would have mercy on the rebels. Moses allowed his prayer to be tempted by a lack of faith.
How did God respond when Moses struck the rock not once but twice?
God answered Moses’ prayer, but he was not pleased that Moses had felt the need to strike the rock twice.
What did God say to Moses about his lack of faith?
“Because you were not faithful to me in showing my sanctity to the Israelites, you shall not lead this assembly into the land I will give them.”
Why was God unhappy with Moses?
Because of his lack of faith in God’s unfailing love for the people.
What does the story of Meribah show?
That we must accept the results of our actions and decisions
What did the Israelites want even as they struggled through their desert experience and often complained?
To be happy
Many times we seek happiness where?
It cannot be found.
Jesus taught that true happiness is only found where?
In God
In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave us a recipe for finding happiness in the Kingdom of God. What was this recipe called?
The Beatitudes
