2.10 immuno Flashcards
(10 cards)
Adjuvants act on
APCs, especially dendritic cells
What are adjuvants
Substances that enhance immunogenicity of antigens
Effects of adjuvants are mediated through activation of
TLRs
Mechanism of ISCOMs
ISCOMs enclose a viral peptide
ISCOM fuses with APC (and releases viral peptide inside)
Peptide gets attached to MHC I and activates CD8 T cell
Which MHC is strongly associated with resistance to cerebral malaria
HLAB53
Peptide vaccine steps for malaria
Identify good candidate peptides (in this case small because it’s an MHCI and pro as second AA)
Test for high binding to HLA(B53) - high binding because it’s a MHCI
Test for proliferation if T cells from infected malaria patients
Effects of corticosteroids
Anti inflammatory Weight gain Diabetes Fluid retention Bone mineral loss Thinning of skin
Therapy for rheumatoid arthritis
Develop a TNFa antibody (so can get rid of immune effects like swelling and inflammation)
In RA therapy, what factors are improved
Pain goes down
Less swollen joints
Decr CRP
How does anti MHC II antibody therapy work
Normally:
Oligodendrocytes release myelin basic protein (MBP) which the macrophage engulfs
Th1 cells with receptors for MBP bind macrophage and get activated
Th1 cells then activate macrophage to kill oligodendrocytes
If you use anti MHCII Ab, will bind to macrophage so it can’t interact with Th1
If use
